The History of Volcanoes National Park

A Legacy of Conservation

Established in 1925, Volcanoes National Park is one of Africa’s oldest national parks. Initially created to protect the mountain gorillas from poaching, the park has since become a beacon of conservation efforts. Its establishment marked the beginning of Rwanda’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage and promoting sustainable tourism.

Dian Fossey’s Influence

The park gained international fame through the work of renowned primatologist Dian Fossey, who dedicated her life to studying and protecting mountain gorillas. Her efforts not only increased global awareness of these magnificent creatures but also contributed to significant conservation successes. Visitors can learn more about her legacy at the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International research center located within the park.

The Wonders of Volcanoes Park

Mountain Gorilla Trekking

This once-in-a-lifetime adventure allows visitors to get up close and personal with these gentle giants in their natural habitat. Led by experienced guides, treks typically last between one to eight hours, depending on the location of the gorilla families. Witnessing a gorilla family interact and play is a profoundly moving experience that leaves a lasting impact.

Golden Monkey Tracking

In addition to gorillas, the park is home to the endangered golden monkey. These playful primates, known for their striking golden fur, can be observed in the bamboo forests of the park. Golden monkey tracking is a delightful activity, offering a chance to observe these agile creatures as they leap from tree to tree.

The park is home to five of the eight Virunga volcanoes: Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo. Each volcano presents a unique hiking experience, with Mount Karisimbi being the highest at 4,507 meters.
